Charlie Chaplin Live Cinema Weekend.
Experience live cinema as it would have looked and sounded in the 1920s! Conductor Thomas Wilson will lead the Colorado Springs Philharmonic in a fascinating historical rendition of cinema and movie watching from a bygone era. Accompanied live by the orchestra, thefilms will be projected on a giant screen hanging above the Pikes Peak Center stage.

The Philharmonic Pops Double Feature, showing The Idle Class and The Kid, will tell two tales filled with humor and touching stories as only Charlie Chaplin could spin them. The Idle Class is a story of the “Little Tramp” who heads to a resort for warm weather and golf. While there, a neglected wife mistakes Chaplin for her husband. In The Kid, Chaplin’s Tramp finds and cares for an abandoned baby. As the child gets older, he becomes the Tramp’s partner in crime, scamming people in order to survive. Eventually, the welfare service attempts to take the boy away, resulting in a desperate search and the boy’s emotional return.

Jackie Coogan’s story is legendary. As the first real child star, he earned between three and four million dollars, which was taken and squandered by his parents. Coogan sued his parents in 1938 (at age 23) and received $126,000 of the remaining funds. Many years later, Coogan returned to the small screen as Uncle Fester in The Addams Family television series.

The Chaplin film weekend is sponsored in part by the H. Chase Stone Trust, Colorado Council on the Arts, National Endowment for the Arts, the Deluxe Corporation, The Gazette, and CEAVCO; with additional support from the Kirkpatrick Family Fund, P. Bruce and Virginia C. Benson Foundation, T. Rowe Price Associates Foundation, and Target.
