Summertime Classic Concert - July 17.
Summertime fun at the Pikes Peak Center, with favorites from West Side Story, La Bohème, Beethoven, Dvořák, and much more! Saturday, July 17, 2010, 8:00 pm. Conducted and hosted by Lawrence Leighton Smith.
Join Maestro Lawrence Leighton Smith and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic for a summertime celebration of love, music, and friendship. The evening will feature the music of Beethoven, Bernstein, Dvořák, and Puccini, with soloists Désirée Dodson, Tina Lovejoy, Yang Bo (all three of whom performed at the Philharmonic’s La Bohème season opener last year), and Concertmaster Michael Hanson.
It took Antonín Dvořák just over two months to complete his orchestral masterpiece: Symphony No. 8. Inspired by the warm Bohemian summer of 1889, the famous finale movement features a jubilant allegro melody and rousing coda. The opening cello melody is a tribute to the relief of cool summer evenings.
Concertmaster Michael Hanson concludes the first half with two of the most famous violin works ever written. A slow harp arpeggio welcomes the violin’s weeping melody in Jules Massenet’s Meditation from Thaïs, and Pablo Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen is a monument to the Concertmaster’s technical virtuosity. During the driving finale, Hanson is asked to pluck notes with his left hand (normally used for fingering) while simultaneously bowing different notes. The effect is jaw dropping.
The evening concludes with Leonard Bernstein’s iconic Overture from West Side Story. Featuring 28 different percussion instruments, the Overture’s driving rhythm takes the audience to the summer markets of Puerto Rico and the sweltering alleys of New York City. The famous melody of Somewhere mourns the despair of forbidden love. Based on the noise that subway car wheels make as the train leaves the station, it is a fitting conclusion to the evening and a welcome anticipation of summers yet to come.
Upcoming Concert:
A Hero's Life - 2010-11 Season Opener!
The Maestro begins his final season with an artistic milestone: Strauss's Ein Heldenleben - "A Hero's Life." The work demands enormous orchestra forces, telling of adventures in battle and peace. A few surprises will round out the concert!

Conducted by Lawrence Leighton Smith.
