ACT Achievement Test Registration

Registration is now open for the September 10, 2011 ACT achievement test. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register before August 12, 2011.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It tests what students have actually learned in school, not their aptitude for learning. The ACT also measures what students need to know to be ready for first year credit-bearing college courses based on ACT College Readiness Standards™. Every student’s results can be tied directly to these consistent standards.

The ACT has four sections—English, mathematics, reading and science—and takes about three hours to complete. Students who take the ACT Plus Writing complete an optional writing test that requires an additional 30 minutes. Unlike other exams, students are not penalized for guessing or answering all the questions on each test section. In fact, it is beneficial for test takers to answer all questions within the time allowed.

During registration, students may select up to four universities to receive their score reports. ACT scores are accepted by all four-year colleges and universities across the United States. ACT reports scores only when requested to do so by the student. Additional score reports are available for a small fee.

All students complete a detailed inventory of questions during ACT registration. Each test taker receives an ACT score report that includes a wide variety of information to assist with high school course selection, college readiness, career planning, and college admissions.

The cost for the ACT test without writing is $34. When combined with the optional ACT Writing Test, the total cost is $49.50. Students who qualify may apply for a fee waiver through their high school counselor.

The ACT website, www.actstudent.org, has helpful information, free sample items, and inexpensive test prep materials to help students prepare for the exam. However, the best preparation is to take rigorous core courses in school, study hard, and learn the academic skills needed for college.

Most students register online at www.actstudent.org. Students may also pick up registration forms from their high school counseling offices. Late registration is available until August 26, 2011 for an extra $21 fee.

ASC Community Partnerships Gallery hosts "Desde Ayer"

The ASC Community Partnerships Gallery August exhibit, “Desde Ayer”, will feature the contributions of such musicians as Pedro Casias, Ignacio García, Anastacio Taylor and Juan Chacón. These individuals were well-known performers in the San Luis Valley during the mid-1900s as soloists or as part of a group or a musical family.

“Desde Ayer” coincides with the week-long Hilos Culturales Institute hosted at Adams State College from August 1 through 4. The Institute will feature numerous presentations on Hispano traditions of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado.

The exhibit, displayed throughout August, will include photographs, narrative highlights and musical collections of twenty contributing participants. The display will focus on a trail of musical memories, past and present, of 19th and 20th century music played at community fiestas and celebrations throughout Colorado and New Mexico.

The public is cordially invited to view this distinct collection of fine arts and literature and profiles of past and current performing artists. A community reception is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 3.

Several publications by the Colorado and San Luís Valley Societies of Hispanic Genealogy will be on exhibit and for sale, along with numerous Hilos Culturales Institute faculty who will have their literature and music CDs for sale from August 1 through 4.

ASC Community Partnerships is located at the corner of Main Street and Edgemont Blvd. on the Adams State College campus in Alamosa, Colo. The gallery is free and open to the public and is open from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Extreme Classroom Makeover for Head Start Children by Balfour Beatty plc

Summer deck projects are abundant throughout our community, but this one comes with the promise of great smiles and excitement this August. Balfour Beatty Communities, recent developer on Ft. Carson, will donate time, skill and materials so that children returning to Stratmoor Hills Head Start in August will have a new, safe deck.

The project begins Tuesday, July 19 with the extreme makeover completed on Wednesday, July 20. Hours of construction are 8:30am to 2:30pm.

The deck will be attached to the free-standing modular classroom at Stratmoor Hills Elementary, 200 Loomis Ave, 80906.

"Twenty percent of the 1900 enrolled children at Community Partnership for Child Development are military dependents. Balfour Beatty has a long history of commitment ensuring that military families are taken care of through quality construction projects," explains Delberta Uvalle, CPCD Coordinator of Volunteers. "Our relationship with Ft. Carson families led to this partnership with Balfour Beatty."

Classes for CPCD free preschool programs will begin August 18. As children return to the Stratmoor Hills facility, all smiles and backpacks will enter the way via Balfour Beatty's handiwork.

Foster Youth Face Unique Challenges in Pursuit of Education

A recent report by the University of Chicago highlights the incredible challenges facing youth when they age out of foster care. The report, based on following more than 700 youth for several years after leaving the foster system, found that these youth were more than three times as likely not to get a high school diploma or GED and only one-fifth as likely to have a college degree as their non-foster peers. More than 25 percent experienced homelessness at least once after leaving foster care and less than half were currently employed.

These are troubling statistics—particularly when we are dealing with young adults who already have had to face and overcome so much in their lives, and whose success will be instrumental in helping society break the cycle of child abuse and neglect. These are good kids who have persevered through difficult childhoods with determination. They need our help and support.

Volunteers with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are advocating for foster children in court and helping these youth bridge the gap between childhood and adult responsibilities.

Learn how you can make a difference for a foster child in the Pikes Peak region at www.casappr.org.

It can be a life-saver, too! Preparing your child for a successful future includes knowing their own neighborhood, city, state, country, and points beyond. Success can start with having a globe, or using a map to study another country for a school project.

In real life, maps help hunters and fishermen, policemen, firemen, soldiers, television reporters, businessmen, truckers, or builders - and it starts by understanding and using a map.
